The program was presided over by the Chairperson of ECOWAS, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Former Ghanaian president Jerry John Rawlings and the head of the Commonwealth Observer Mission to the country, former South African president Thambo Mbeki, also witnessed the occasion.

Article 276 of the country's constitution forbids chiefs from taking part in active party politics, urging those who wish to do so to "abdicate his stool or skin." Read more »
