What Is Happening at South Africa's Treasury?

The recent proposal by President Jacob Zuma for fee-free tertiary education which was allegedly forced on the national treasury, is what could have pushed the Treasury's chief, Michael Sachs to resign, says Sean Muller in a Conversation Africa interview. Coupled with this is the scrutiny under which the new Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba falls, given his alleged association with the Gupta family who have been implicated in a state capture report by the then public protector Thuli Madonsela. This and other corruption cases has seen the rand takes a further knock, negatively impacting economic growth.
