The story of how Jean-Claude Bastos de Morais, a close friend of the former president Eduardo dos Santos' son, allegedly enriched himself from the Angolan Sovereign Fund, leaves a lot to be desired. Accused of masterminding a conspiracy to defraud Angola of untold millions of dollars, he is enjoying life as a free man, despite being the subject of police investigations and criminal and civil lawsuits in several countries.
Journalist Rafael Marques de Morais, of Maka Angola, who has braved decades of harassment and prosecution to expose corruption and human rights abuses in his native Angola, has been named the International Press Institute 70th World Press Freedom Hero.
