Sahle-Work Zewde, president of Ethiopia
Ethiopia's new head of state, Sahle-Work Zewde, is Africa's only current woman president. She has signaled that she will use the largely ceremonial position in the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, an ambitious reformer, to lead by example and by expressing strong opinions. "If the reforms started are led in equal measure by both men and women, the country will soon forget poverty and backwardness, and move toward prosperity", she said in a public address. Zewde. Half of Ethiopia's top ministerial positions are filled by women, including the new defence minister. African women are watching to see whether those predictions can be fulfilled and whether the number of women in high offices will grow.
