Crackdown on Matatus Sparks Public Transport Crisis in Kenya

Kenyan police have kicked off a major campaign targeting non-compliant public transport operators. In Nairobi, most operators took their vehicles off the road to protest Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi's implementation of the "Michuki rules", named after former Transport Minister the late John Michuki. The rules, which include vehicles having functioning seat belts and valid insurance certificates, were not being implemented strictly.
