South African Protesters 'Trying to Draw Politicians' Attention'

"As was widely anticipated, protests have surged - to a new record for the first quarter. It is likely that protesters are making the most of the opportunity to draw politicians' attention to their grievances in the run-up to elections," said Municipal IQ managing director Kevin Allan. A series of countrywide protests - called the Total Shutdown Movement - come in the wake of demonstrations by Alexandra residents who took to the streets demanding better service delivery.

Thousands of residents of Alexandra in Johannesburg shut down the township on Wednesday morning.
