Meet Tererai Trent, Zimbabwean Child Bride Turned Scholar

From growing up in a village and being denied an education because she was a girl, secretly learning to read by using her brother's books and getting married to an abusive husband when she was 11 - Tererai Trent has defied the odds to earn multiple degrees, including a PhD and becoming the only African woman to have been immortalised with a bronze statue in New York City.

Tererai Trent is one of 10 Statues For Equality created by sculptors Gillie and Marc Schattner.
