Prisoners Sue South African Justice Minister Over Alleged Torture

Five current and former prisoners of Leeuwkop Maximum Correctional Centre are suing the minister of Justice and Correctional Services for alleged assault and torture by prison officials, GroundUp reports. Inmate Xolani Zulu testified that he was beaten by officers who were armed with electric shock riot shields, helmets and pepper spray.

Xolani Zulu testified in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday alleging he was assaulted by prison officials at Leeuwkop Maximum Correctional Centre.
