The Committee to Protect Journalists presented the 2019 International Press Freedom Award to Maxence Melo Mubyazi, owner and co-founder of Jamii Forums, a popular discussion forum for breaking news and secure whistleblowing platform that promotes accountability and transparency in Tanzania.

President Magufuli's government has been accused of targeting Jamii Forum - an online discussion site and source of breaking news - with charges that include terrorism, and refusing to disclose the identities of their users. MD Maxence Melo Mubyazi, whose charges fall under the 2015 Cybercrimes Act - also called the Jamii Forums Law- and the 2010 Electronic and Postal Communications Act, continues to fight in Tanzanian court to clear his name, while being unable to travel outside of Dar es Salaam.
