Veteran Kenyan Politician Charles Rubia Dies Aged 96

Veteran politician Charles Wanyoike Rubia died at his Nairobi home on Monday December 22, 2019. Rubia, who was 96, was the first African mayor of Nairobi and a long-serving cabinet minister. After he joined calls for a return to multi-party democracy in the early 1990s, he was arrested and detained, becoming one of the few Kenyans to be detained twice during the Daniel Arap Moi era.

Former cabinet minister Charles Rubia speaks to reporters as he leaves Milimani Law Courts on February 28, 2018, after a hearing of a lawsuit he filed against the government for illegal detention.
