Party Alliances Abound as Poll Rerun Looms in Malawi

The Malawi Congress Party and the United Transformation Movement have formed an electoral alliance for the May 19 polls. The two parties were behind the lawsuit that prompted a court to throw out 2018's election results and order a rerun of the vote.  President Peter Mutharika's ruling Democratic Progressive Party has also formed an alliance with the United Democratic Front, setting up a fierce battle for the presidency.

MCP leader Lazarous Chakwera (in black) and UTM leader Saulos Chilima (in red) were also taking part in protests against last May election results.
