South Africa Records First COVID-19 Death as Lockdown Begins

South Africa has recorded the first deaths from COVID-19, just as the country's 21-day lockdown comes into effect. The total number of infected people is past the 1,000 mark, Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize has said.

Greenmarket Square in Cape Town, usually a vibrant place for tourist trinkets, was deserted on Tuesday - two days before the national COVID-19 lockdown.
