Authorities Clamp Down on Social Media as Burundians Vote

Burundians went to the polls on Wednesday May 20, 2020 for elections to choose a new president, parliamentarians and local councillors. However, voting was marked by a social media shutdown in the country and complaints about irregularities by the opposition.

Evariste Ndayishimiye, a retired army general replacing President Pierre Nkurunziza, is expected to beat the other six candidates running.
