Telkom Kenya to Go It Alone as Merger With Airtel Falls Through

Eighteen months of merger negotiations between telecoms giants Telkom Kenya and Airtel Networks Kenya has collapsed. Telkom Kenya's CEO Mugo Kibati said "after carefully reviewing the available options, Telkom has opted to adopt an "alternative strategic direction", and in a mutual agreement with Airtel Networks Kenya, will no longer be pursuing the proposed joint venture. Telkom has reportedly been struggling to grow its market share and show a profit. This may offer a silver lining for over 500 Telkom staff who were facing retrenchment when merger talks were announced.
