Graft-Accused Former Mugabe VP Faces Uncertain Future

Allegations against Phelekezela Mphoko are that in 2016, while he was still vice president, he stormed a police station in Harare and ordered the release of two suspects who were facing corruption allegations. In the last days of the late former president Robert Mugabe's rule, relations between Mphoko and Emmerson Mnangagwa became strained, as the latter was believed to be in a Zanu-PF faction that pushed for Grace Mugabe to succeed Mugabe ahead of Mnangagwa. However, critics say Mnangagwa is hunting down Mphoko because he was used as a blunt instrument by Mugabe to attack him at the height of his succession battles.
