Despite Drop in Cases, Covid-19 Still a Threat to South Africa

Despite a drop in confirmed Covid-19 cases, experts have warned that 80% of the country is still at considerable risk of the Covid-19 outbreak. This comes as public clinics in Cape Town continue to have long queues with medical staff trying to prevent overcrowding. Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the publication of a list of all Covid-19-related government expenditures which includes procurement information from all provinces, national departments, and over 70 public entities. This follows reports of corruption among high-ranking members of the ruling African National Congress who allegedly benefited from government contracts to procure personal protection equipment. As of August 27, 2020, the nation has the highest Covid-19 infection rate on the continent with 615,701 confirmed cases, 13,502 deaths and 525,242 recoveries.
