ECOWAS Summit Gives Mali Junta a Deadline

The 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on Mali's new military government to appoint a civilian to head a transition government, Al Jazeera reports. In a statement after the bloc's summit in Niamey in Niger, ECOWAS commission chief Jean-Claude Kassi Brou said Mali's civilian transition president and prime minister "must be appointed no later than September 15". In other developments at the summit, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was elected chairman for the next year, while Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari urged West African leaders not to elongate their tenures in office.
