Kenya President Trims the Fat, Blocks Ex-MPs Pensions

MPs who retired between 1984 and 2001 will not receive a monthly pension of U.S.$900 for life, under revised changes to the National Assembly's retirement benefits law. President Uhuru Kenyatta has recommended the deletion of the clause that carries the primary content of the parliamentary pension amendment bill, 2019, saying that it "overlooks" the mandate of the salaries and remuneration commission. The passage of the bill would have meant that the government had to pay at least U.S.$10,6 million in a lumpsum enhanced pension to the former MPs. The amount is backdated to July 1, 2010, when the Parliamentary Service Commission adopted recommendations made by the Akiwumi Tribunal, which reviewed the terms and conditions of MPs and employees of parliament. This follows the government's attempts at managing the current economic debt burden.
