Nigerian Governor Signs Stringent New Law on Rape

Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna State, has signed into law a measure introducing tough penalties for convicted rapists. These new provisions include the punishments of surgical castration or removal of fallopian tubes. The previous law carried a maximum penalty of 21 years imprisonment for the rape of an adult and life imprisonment for the rape of a child. Kaduna is the only state in Nigeria with such legal provisions on rape.
