World Condemns Nigeria Govt Action Against #EndSARS Protesters

The United Nations and European Union have joined a wave of condemnation of a harsh crackdown on anti-police brutality protesters in Nigeria. Witnesses said gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 citizens in Lagos, and local news outlets and Amnesty International are reporting that people were killed, though the death toll remains unclear. The international bodies were joined by U.S. leaders including presidential candidate Joe Biden, sportspeople and artists in expressing outrage. Thousands of protesters, under the banner #EndSARS, have been demanding sweeping police reforms in the country. The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been dissolved and replaced by the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has said the #EndSARS protests may mar the country's growth projections.
