Fishing for Peace in Kenya's Pokot Area

Kenya's Riting and Reres areas in West Pokot County have been nicknamed Kosovo, for the bloodshed that the community has endured for decades, due to cattle rustling and banditry. The government has tried various initiatives to try and end the conflict. What has been most effective though in restoring peace, is, wait for it, fishing. Turkana and Pokot communities have taken advantage of the Turkwel Dam to get water for the ponds. The county government has even set up the Turkwel Beach Management Unit (BMU). The project has also boosted security in the region because the young men who used to engage in cattle rustling, now focus on fishing to earn a living, according to BMU's manager, Lopuo Lotelekwang.
