Covid-19 Worsening Insecurity in Africa - UN

The United Nations has said that the security challenges in West Africa and the Sahel, occasioned by violent attacks by militant groups, Boko Haram and the Islamic State for West African Province (ISWAP) are worsened by the coronavirus pandemic. Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, said that attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP within the Lake Chad general area and the Sahel in March 2020, resulted in significant losses to the defence and security forces of Nigeria, Chad and Niger Republic. Measures and restrictions put in place to contain the spread of the disease have limited human movement and opportunities to work, straining the ability to afford food and other basic needs.
