One Million Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine Secured for South Africa

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that the nation will receive one million doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in January 2021 and a further 500,000 doses in February in a deal struck with the Serum Institute of India. An estimated 1.25 million public and private frontline healthcare workers will be first in line to receive the vaccine, Mkhize said. This comes as the country faces a second wave of infections from a mutated strain of the novel coronavirus and the highest number of Covid-19-related deaths since July 2020.
