Nigeria, Niger Embark on New Rail Venture

Plans for a rail line between Nigeria and Niger Republic are underway. Portuguese construction firm Mota-Engil signed a nearly U.S.$2 billion contract with Nigeria's Ministry of Transport for its construction. The new rail corridor will run through three states: Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina and through to Niger's Maradi. Other cities that will be connected with the rail line in Nigeria are Danbatta, Kazaure, Daura, Mashi, Katsina, and Jibiya. The project is part of the Nigerian government's plan to build rail networks to address the poor transport infrastructure that has slowed down economic growth for decades. During construction, more than one thousand direct jobs will be created.
