Covid-19 Worsens Africa's Human Trafficking Problem - UN

The UN has released a new report, The Trafficking in Persons Report,  which states that poverty arising from lost jobs or other economic opportunities has, over the last year, increased the pool of people most vulnerable to trafficking. In East Africa, seven in every 10 traffickers arrested were reportedly male and most of them were arrested on home soil. The Covid-19 pandemic may have a negative impact on the provision of timely and fair legal proceedings, contribute to case backlogs and limit the legal services provided to victims of trafficking. Prosecution of those involved has had to be delayed, effectively denying the victims justice, the report has said.
