Ugandan Govt Finally Restores Internet After Month-Long Shutdown
Internet and social media services have been fully reinstated, Uganda's ICT Minister Ogwang Ogwang has said. Services were switched off on the eve of the presidential elections held on January 14, 2021. Ugandans resorted to using virtual private networks to navigate around the blockage which preceded the elections. Security forces made dozens of arrests for alleged election-related violence, surrounding the headquarters of the main opposition party, National Unity Platform whose leader, Robert Kyagulanyi known as Bobi Wine, was confined to his home for several days in January. The total shutdown of the internet is one of the grounds on which Kyagulanyi wants President Yoweri Museveni's victory annulled.
