Nigeria Population Growth Impacts Food, Infrastructure, Education
Leaders in various capacities have raised their concerns at the surge in the population growth in Nigeria. It has been said that this would be the cause that education targets are not met or that infrastructure development would not be able to provide for the growing number of people, currently at over 211 million. The former Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi who is also Nigeria's former central bank governor, has said that "Nigeria will continue to struggle with the funding of education, if it fails to address its population growth". Sanusi is calling for strict family planning to be implemented. This comes as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the need to create a food system that works "has never been more urgent and more existential" as the country's poverty levels have worsened, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic fallout.
