U.S. State Dept Points at Rights Abuse in Nigeria, Zimbabwe

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken - who called for an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses in Ethiopia's Tigray region - has slammed state-sanctioned violence against civil society activists, labour leaders, and opposition members in Zimbabwe, naming the southern African nation among countries that include China, Russian, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua that are abusing their citizens' rights.

This comes after the release of the U.S. State Department's 2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices which assesses countries' human rights and worker rights performance. Nigeria has also been named in the report with the U.S. accusing the nation of unlawful and arbitrary killings by both government and non-state actors; forced disappearances by the government, terrorists, and criminal groups; torture and cases of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the government and terrorist groups; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions.
