Buhari Replaces Nigeria’s Police Chief After Owerri Prison Attack

Usman Alkali Baba will serve as the acting inspector-general of police, moving from his current position as deputy inspector general. He takes over from Mohammed Adamu whose tenure ended in February 2021 but which was controversially extended by President Muhammadu Buhari. Adamu was removed from his position after a jailbreak in Imo State that allowed more than 1,800 inmates to escape. The police blamed the attack on the Indigenous People Of Biafra, which denied any involvement, calling these accusations "false" and "misleading". The new police boss comes to the post in the face of repeated attacks on police stations and prison facilities in Imo State. He is expected to rein-in the escalating violent crimes in the region and across the country.
