Buhari Returns to Nigeria After UK Medical Check-Up

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned from London, where he had travelled for a medical check-up. Buhari, who took a "routine" medical trip to the UK on March 30, 2021 has been heavily criticised for opting for treatment abroad while the country's healthcare system remained "mismanaged and underfunded" and at a time when resident doctors were preparing for a nationwide strike. The strike that commenced on April 1, 2021 has since been suspended. In his absence, Nigeria's security woes escalated further, with bandits and Boko Haram insurgents continuing with unabated attacks on some communities and humanitarian facilities. Since he took office in 2015, it is the seventh time the president has travelled to the UK for medical attention.
