Deadly Violence At Anti-Junta Protests In Chad

At least five people have been killed during banned protests against Chad's new military junta, which is led by Mahamat Déby, son of veteran ruler Idriss Déby who was killed in an attack on April 19, 2021. France has condemned the ban and has called for the junta to ensure a peaceful transition. While the goverrnment is reporting five deaths, a local NGO is reporting nine fatalities - seven in the capital and two in the south. The junta leader has promised to hold "free and democratic" elections within 18 months, while also pledging to "fight terrorism and respect all its international obligations".
