South African Covid-19 Infections Surge Amid Third Infection Wave

The Cape Town International Convention Centre has been identified as a site for administering Covid-19 vaccinations en masse. This comes after the National Institute for Communicable Diseases confirmed that South Africa is now experiencing the third wave after analysing recent infection rates.

The Ministerial Advisory Committee, which provides recommendations on managing the Covid-19 pandemic, defines the new wave seven-day moving average threshold as 30% of the peak incidence of the previous wave. As of June 11, 2021, confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country total 1,722,086, of which 57,410 proved fatal and 1,593,059 1,593,059 resulted in recovery.
