Will the World Act in Time to Stop a Covid Doomsday Virus?

Two actions announced today in Geneva at World Health Organization headquarters aim to boost vaccine production in Africa - where Covid-19 deaths have risen 80 percent in a month - and to mobilize more funds for vaccines, tests and treatments needed to block Covid variants that could evade all existing vaccines.

Afrigen, a South African biotechnology company, is part of a consortium working to boost Covid-19 vaccine production. The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), along Afrigen and Biologicals and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa (Biovac), the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have agreed to establish a tech transfer hub in South Africa.
