Defending Champions Algeria Knocked Out of AFCON 2021

Cote d'Ivoire has beaten Algeria 3-1 to finish top of Group E at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2021 in Cameroon. That means the defending champions have been eliminated from the competition. In other January 20, 2022 matches, Equatorial Guinea have qualified for the knock-out stage after a hard fought 1-0 win against Sierra Leone while debutants Gambia continued to make history when they beat Tunisia in a fascinating Group F encounter. The Eagles of Mali beat Mauritania 2-0 in Douala to secure top spot in Group F.

In an earlier shock development, the Comoros beat four-time champions Ghana at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on Tuesday January 18, 2022, in the third and final day of Group C, rekindling their hopes of advancing in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana - one of the greatest powers in world football - are officially out of the competition, CAF Online reports.

The tournament is now down to the Round of 16, a knockout stage in which winners will advance to the quarter-finals.
