Egypt, Equatorial Guinea Through to #AFCON2021 Quarter Finals

Equatorial Guinea needed penalties to beat Mali after a goalless draw in extra-time to reach the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021. In the other January 26, 2022 match, Egypt qualified for the quarter finals following a 5-4 penalty  shootout victory over Cote d'Ivoire.

Earlier Senegal roared into the quarter finals defeating Cape Verde 2-0 in a round of 16 match, while the Atlas Lions of Morocco secured their quarter final place with a victory over Malawi. Both matches started with a moment of silence ahead of kickoff in memory of the victims of the Olembe Stadium stampede on January 24, 2022.

Egypt and Equatorial Guinea join Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Gambia as teams which move through to the next round, which starts with a match between Gambia and host nation Cameroon on Saturday January 29, 2022.

The group stages produced some surprises, with defending champions Algeria and four-time champions Ghana being knocked out of the tournament.
