Despite War in Ukraine, 'Do Not Forget South Sudan'

While international attention is focussed on war in Europe and the resulting tragedy, "it is critical... that we do not forget South Sudan", where crucial provisions of a peace agreement have not been implemented and planned elections could plunge the nation into violence.

This was the stark warning given to the Human Rights Council in Geneva by Yasmin Sooka, chair of the council's Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, reports Peter Kenny for AllAfrica.

Among the human rights violations reported by the Commission were incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, including the rape of women and girls by armed men. "Parties to the ongoing conflict continue to use sexual violence as a weapon of terror and political repression and as a tactic to advance their strategic objectives, including to displace the civilian population in order to control contested territory," the report said.

Yasmin Sooka, who chairs the UN Human Rights Council's Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, addresses a UN Security Council session in 2020 on the topic of "Peacebuilding and sustaining peace: Transitional justice in conflict and post-conflict situations."
