Triumph and Heartache at African Athletics Champs 2022
Mauritius is playing host to the most prestigious African athletics event - the CAA African Championships, with 500 athletes from 40 African countries participating from June 8-12, 2022. Many titles have been lost and new winners crowned.
Kenyan sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala, 26, is the new Africa 100m champ, displacing South African record holder Akani Simbine, 28, into a second place in a photo finish display. Omanyala struck again to take a second gold in the men's relay event. Nigeria has also taken home some gold with the women's 400x100m relay team and their women's discus team taking to the podium. South Africa's Caster Semenya - winner of two Olympic gold medals in the 800m and three time gold winner at the World Champs, came in a disappointing sixth in the women's 5,000m event. Werner Visser from South Africa won gold in the men's discus event.
South Africa and Kenya currently occupy the top two spots with five and four gold medals respectively.
