Africa’s Stake in Putin’s War

A collaborative report in October by the World Meteorological Organization, the African Union, the Economic Commission for Africa (through the Africa Climate Policy Centre) and other scientific organizations finds that the climate crisis is exacerbating hunger, causing widespread flooding and displacement of people

Extreme hunger is affecting an estimated 40 million Africans, amid a continuing Covid pandemic driven partly by inequitable access to vaccines. More than 80 percent of Africa's trade is with counties outside the continent,  exacerbating Africa's dependence, for example, on imported wheat from Ukraine and Russia, which together supply around 40 percent of Africa's grain. Guest columnist Rosa Whitaker writes that Putin's war should be condemned - and that African nations, working together and utilizing their combined expertise, can - and must - address their interlocking crises.

"Africa is not responsible for turning the earth’s atmosphere into a hothouse," says former U.S. trade representative for Africa Rosa Whitaker, but its countries must combine their efforts to respond.
