Zimbabwe, South Africa to Collaborate on Expiry of Permits
Zimbabwe and South Africa will work together to find a common solution on the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) that are due to expire at the end of 2022, Africa Moyo of The Herald reports.
Zimbabwean Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Ambassador Frederick Shava, said the expiry of the exemption permits "has been on the cards for some time" since South Africa announced the new measures which would have left hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans and their children no longer be able to live, work and go to school in South Africa legally.
"The Zimbabwe Exemption Permit will expire at the end of this year. Its expiry is naturally causing much anxiety to the holders of this permit," Shava said. Our two governments must work closely in the implementation of this decision. We are ready to receive our nationals back home."
The termination of the ZEP will otherwise leave about 178,000 Zimbabweans undocumented, as well as thousands of children who have been born in South Africa to parents hiolding the permit. Legal action was also taken by the Helen Suzman Foundation over the original decision to scrap the permit.
