Ethiopian Tigrayans Held In Afar Camps Begin Return Home

Thousands of Tigrayans who have been forcibly kept in detention camps in Semera, in Afar regional state, have begun returning to Ab'ala town.

In June 2022 the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) documented the detention of approximately 9,000 Tigrayans who had been held "illegally and unconstitutionally" since December 2020 in Semera and Agatina camps in the town of Semera, Afar Regional state. The Commission called for the immediate end to the detention.

Last week, UN agencies appealed for U.S.$73 million over the next six months to provide food rations to more than 750,000 people seeking refuge in Ethiopia.

The impending crisis will leave vulnerable families at risk of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, and increased susceptibility to diseases, the agencies warned

After six months without large-scale confrontations between their respective forces, the Ethiopian government and Tigray regional leaders have both confirmed their intention to participate in efforts to bring the war that began in November 2021 to an end.
