Al-Shabaab Militants Issue New Threats Against Kenya
Somali-based, Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, has issued a new threat against Kenya. The group said it will continue targeting Kenyan towns and cities as long as Kenyan troops are in Somalia.
It said that if the Kenyan government continues to maintain its "invasion" of Muslim lands it will continue to strike inside Kenya.
Mohamed Husein Gaas, director of the Raad Peace Research Institute based in Mogadishu, told Voice of America (VOA) that Al-Shabaab threats are real, as they have seen the organization become stronger financially in the last few years, despite the presence of African Union forces in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting the Somali government and AU peacekeeping operations in the country for more than 15 years, reports Mohammed Dhaaysane for VOA.
In April 2020 it was reported that the militant group's activities appeared to have intensified in Kenya's coastal and northeastern regions, where it has deployed local recruits to collect millions of shillings through extortion, illegal taxation and even robbery.
