Ugandan MPs Consider Opposing the Hiking of School Fees

These concerns were raised following a submission by Kole North County MP, Samuel Opio, drew the MPs' attention to the school fees hike across Uganda, during interaction with the Committee on Education and Sports.

Opio called on the government to offer bursary schemes at each district to support secondary and vocational training for the best performers, as a mechanism to strengthen enrolment. Some MPs supported his view, while others said it would be unfair to reduce fees of private schools because they suffered during Covid-19 period, but said the quality of government schools should be improved.

Committee chairperson John Twesigye said the members will visit schools and carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter of the hike in fees.
