Dozens Killed After Bus Hits Explosive Device in Burkina Faso

At least 35 civilians were killed and 37 were injured on September 5, 2022 after the vehicle in which they were travelling, struck an improvised explosive device (IED).

The escorted supply convoy heading to the capital, Ouagadougou, hit the device between the northern towns of Djibo and Bourzanga, the interim government said in a statement.

In early August, 2022 15 soldiers died in a double explosion in the same area. Burkina Faso is in the grip of a seven-year insurgency that has killed more than 2,000 people and forced some 1.9 million others to flee.

With more than 40% of the country outside government control, Burkina's military government - which took power in January 2022 - has made countering the insurgency its top priority.
