Ugandan Police Hails 'Crime Free' Nyege Nyege Festival

Police has said the just concluded Nyege Nyege festival held on September 15th to 18th, 2022 had no major crime incident reported. "We didn't register cases of immorality like it was allayed in the fears of Members of Parliament and members of the public. The festival ended successfully as goers enjoyed the smashing performance from a number of artists," police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said.

Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja overruled Parliament, and gave organisers of the Nyege Nyege festival a green light for it to go ahead as planned. This was after the speaker of the House Anita Among has said the annual music festival should not be permitted to take place.

Nabbanjah said the event should go ahead under strict guidelines, since many foreign guests had already paid for tickets. According to festival organisers, the event that started 8 yeas ago focuses on electronic music scenes across Africa, as well as sounds from the global diaspora and others. However, many stakeholders have criticised the event since its inception, for encouraging homosexuality and sexual immorality.
