New Report Lays Bare Massive Global Failures in Covid-19 Response

A new global report highlights massive global failures in the response to Covid-19, which resulted in an estimated 17.7 million excess deaths (including those not reported) to September 15, 2022, The Conversation Africa reports.

The Lancet Covid-19 Commission report, which was convened by The Lancet medical journal, highlights that the pandemic has reversed progress made towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in many countries, further impacting on health and wellbeing.

The report found that most governments were ill-prepared, too slow to act, paid too little attention to the most vulnerable in their societies, and were hampered by low public trust and an epidemic of misinformation. It also found that the World Health Organisation acted too cautiously and too slowly on several important matters. (Read the WHO response here).

The commission was established in mid-2020 and has 28 members with expertise in fields such as public policy, international cooperation, epidemiology and vaccinology. The commissioners oversaw 12 task forces that met regularly throughout the pandemic and included more than 170 experts, CNN reports.
