Senior Somali Officials Among Dead In Car Bombings

Somalia was shaken by three bomb blasts on Monday, October 3, 2022 - in which over 40 people, including senior government officials were killed. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The recently elected head of state, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, vowed that every effort would be made to eradicate Al-Shabaab after a string of deadly attacks, including a siege in August on a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, that lasted 30 hours.

The government also announced the death of Abdullahi Yare, a top Al-Shabaab operative, who it said was killed on October 1, 2022 in a strike in the country's south.

The Somali government is involved in a major counterterrorism offensive against Al-Shabaab in the central regions of the country. The operation has gained the support of local tribal militias in Hiran and Galgaduud who have joined forces with federal and state government authorities.
