Anti-Apartheid Hero's Killer Stabbed in South African Prison

The convicted killer of anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani was stabbed in prison ahead of his release on parole from a life sentence.

South African prison authorities said on Tuesday November 29, 2022 that the 69-year-old Polish man Janusz Walus was stabbed, allegedly by a fellow inmate. Walus had been convicted of the 1993 killing of Hani, an opponent of South Africa's apartheid government.

Walus was set to walk free after a Constitutional Court ruling, writes Chris Gilili for Scrolla.

During the near-30 years Walus has spent in prison, he has made several attempts to be released on parole. Chief Justice of South Africa Raymond Zondo said that the March 2020 decision to reject Walus's request for parole had been reviewed and set aside.

Right-wing politician Clive Derby-Lewis, who was alleged to have ordered the hit carried out by Walus, was granted medical parole in 2015. He died of cancer in 2016.
