Gambia Declares Mourning Period After Vice President Dies

President Adama Barrow has announced a seven-day mourning period following the death of his Vice President Badara Alieu Joof after a short illness. The vice president passed away in India where he was seeking treatment. Joof will lay in state and be accorded a state funeral.

According to a government statement, the vice president had served in various capacities including minister of higher education, research, science and technology, permanent secretary in various ministries also served as World Bank Director for west and central Africa for over a decade. He left this position to take up cabinet appointment on 4th May 2022.

The Vice President of Gambia Alieu Badara Joof has died.
