Malawi Focuses on Rebuilding Following Impact of Cyclone Freddy

President Lazarus Chakwera has called on citizens to "roll up their sleeves and get back to work" in an effort to rebuild Malawi, following the devastating effect of Cyclone Freddy, Nyasa Times reports. "If we are to see the light of a new dawn again, we must take necessary steps now for safeguarding a brighter tomorrow," he said.

This comes after a surge in the number of cholera cases reported among children in the wake of the disaster. The Southern African Development Community released U.S.$300,000 to Malawi for humanitarian assistance.

As of March 22, 2023, the death toll from Cyclone Freddy stood at 507 in Malawi while 1,332 people were injured and 537 were reported missing.
