Ethiopia Establishes New Tigray Interim Govt

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed the spokesperson of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) Getachew Reda, as head of an interim administration in the Tigray region, Addis Standard reports.

Reda's appointment is the latest sign of progress in the peace accord signed on November 2, 2022 - ending the two-year war between the government and the TPLF.

The Twitter message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office on March 23, 2023 also announced that the interim regional administration will be in place until elections are held for the region.

The conflict between Ethiopia and Tigray region escalated into a full-scale war in November 2020. Millions of people were displaced and fled to neighbouring countries such as Sudan. Attempts at an AU-led peaceful resolution were made, with peace talks held in South Africa in October 2022, which ended in a peace deal on November 3, 2022, AllAfrica reports.

The fallout from the war includes a probe by the United Nations, of human rights abuses on the part of the Eritrean army on Tigrayan civilians. Ethiopia and Eritrea on March 22, 2023, slammed the U.S. State Department's report on the war as "defamatory and inflammatory". Calls have also been made for the unblocking of media curbs by the Ethiopian government as the probe commences.

The Ethiopian government has also removed from Tigray from its terrorist list.
